Ahead of the Curve: Glamorgan Voluntary Service Prepares for Benefits System Reforms
Glamorgan Voluntary Services (GVS) today highlighted the significant implications of the benefit system changes announced in Parliament on the 18th March. An information sheet produced by GVS outlines key changes, including stricter Personal Independence Payment (PIP) eligibility, the end of Work Capability Assessments, and reforms to Universal Credit and unemployment insurance.
The changes are anticipated to increase demand for advice and support services within the Vale of Glamorgan and could lead to a rise in poverty and hardship. The third sector will need to adapt service delivery models and build stronger partnerships to effectively support local communities.
Clive Curtis, Operational Manager at Glamorgan Voluntary Services (GVS), stated: "Today's benefit announcements represent a significant shift in how support is provided, and it is crucial that the third sector in the Vale of Glamorgan understands and prepares for these changes. While some measures, such as the increased Universal Credit standard allowance and the 'Right to Try' scheme, offer potential positives, we are concerned about the impact of stricter PIP rules and changes to the Universal Credit health element on vulnerable individuals. Our priority now is to work jointly with local organisations to ensure we can continue to provide essential support and advocate for the needs of our communities during this period of transition."
GVS is urging all third sector organisations in the Vale of Glamorgan to familiarise themselves with the details of the changes, consider their potential impact, and engage with GVS to share any concerns.
