World Patient Safety Day 2024

Diagnostic errors can be delayed, missed or incorrect and happen at every stage of the diagnostic process in all healthcare settings.

Through the popular slogan “Get it right, make it safe”, the World Health Organisation (WHO) is appealing for concerted efforts to significantly reduce diagnostic errors through a variety of interventions rooted in systems thinking, human factors and actively engaging patients, loved ones, health workers and healthcare leaders with the four broad objectives:

  • Raise global awareness of errors in diagnosis contributing to patient harm and emphasise the pivotal role of correct, timely and safe diagnosis in improving patient safety.

  • Give prominence to diagnostic safety in patient safety policy and clinical practice at all levels of health care, aligned with the Global Patient Safety Action Plan 2021–2030.

  • Foster collaboration among policy-makers, health care leaders, health workers, patient organisations, and other stakeholders in advancing correct, timely and safe diagnosis.

  • Empower patients and families to actively engage with health workers and health care leaders to improve diagnostic processes.

True to the theme of the 2024 World Patient Safety Day; ‘Improving diagnosis for patient safety’, Cardiff and Vale University Health Board will be hosting a number of awareness events in the lead up to the official day (17th September) to promote visibility among colleagues and members of the community around the role of innovation and AI assisted technology in reducing diagnostic delays and errors.

To celebrate #WorldPatientSafetyDay, we are hosting a Marketplace event at the University Hospital of Wales on Friday 13 September from 1.30pm to 2pm.  The event will be held in the foyer outside the lecture theatres (this can be accessed through Y Gegin or via the entrance opposite the Dental School) and refreshments will be available.
