Where to find support in Cardiff and the Vale as alcohol-specific deaths hit 20-year high

Alcohol misuse affects millions every day, causing worsened mental and physical health. The Office for National Statistics (ONS) has reported that deaths attributed to alcohol misuse in England and Wales have dramatically increased. As a Health Board we continue to work in partnership with a number of organisations across Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan, including South Wales Police, local universities, Cardiff Council and Vale of Glamorgan Council, to provide support and reduce alcohol harm.

Alcohol-specific deaths on the rise

The provisional data for England and Wales has shown alcohol-specific deaths rose by 20% during 2020, compared with the same period in 2019. At 13.6 deaths per 100,000, this is the highest rate for almost two decades. ONS has reported that this increase in deaths is more likely to be attributed to those with previous history of alcohol misuse or dependency.

There is work being undertaken to understand why the increase in alcohol-specific deaths has been so stark. A contributing factor might have been the COVID-19 pandemic, with those who already drink heavily more likely to have been drinking more. During the pandemic those who need help with their drinking and alcohol-related conditions may also not of been seeking the support they need.

How much is too much?

To keep health risks from drinking alcohol to a low level, men and women should not exceed 14 units per week and it is advisable to spread your drinking over three or more days, and have several alcohol free days per week.

If you regularly drink over these levels, reducing your drinking can improve your sleeping and mood, help you feel more energetic and reduce your risk of heart disease, liver disease, strokes and some cancers.

We encourage anyone who has any concerns over their alcohol consumption to seek support from our local services or speak to your GP.
