Volunteer as a Gig Buddy

Being a Gig Buddy Volunteer aged 18+ involves attending an event with a person who has a learning disability, once a month. You also help them to choose the event and help with practical / transport arrangements.

Due to Covid-19, these have been changed to being online events.  Our volunteers are meeting online for virtual parties and digital events, and whenever it is safe to do so, meeting up outdoors. As soon as we are able to do so; Gig Buddies will go back to attending gigs, events, and festivals together.

As well as attending events and festivals etc., when it is safe to do so, a person’s “Gig” can be anything; if somebody enjoys sewing or crocheting, anything at all, then these are also gigs things that you can provide support with.

Many people with a learning disability find it difficult to go out and enjoy the things that they love to do. For example, almost 1 in 3 young people with a learning disability spend less than an hour a day outside their homes (2016 Mencap survey of 18-35 year olds with a learning disability).

Time commitment: A suggested time commitment is 1 -2 hour per week during online events.
Expenses reimbursed: Out of pocket expenses are reimbursed
Training provided:  Full training is provided.
Selection procedures: An informal discussion, application form completion, 2 references, and a disclosure and barring (DBS) check (cost met by organisation).
