Loneliness is on the Rise
We are looking for volunteers aged 18+ who can help break down some of these factors causing loneliness and isolation by making a phone call to someone affected by cancer that really needs it.
What will I be doing?
A 20 minute phone call on a weekly basis (or as agreed) can make a huge difference to someone’s day and greatly reduce the impact of isolation and social distancing.
As a telephone befriender, we will put you in touch with someone to share an uplifting chat. This person may be one of our supporters, a service user or another volunteer someone looking for a friendly voice, a listening ear, regular contact, just for a chat.
This role can be carried out from your own home and you can use your own telephone. Volunteers will be able to claim back any expenses for their phone calls made. You can give as much or as little time as you like and we can agree on a routine with your tele-friend/s. It is important that you can make a commitment to the agreement, as we don’t want to disappoint people.
This is a befriending service; you are not expected to have any special knowledge about cancer. In fact, we ask that you do not offer any medical advice. You can remind your Telefriend Match that they can contact our support line nurses on 0808 808 1010 for assistance and medical information.
Skills required: Patience Understanding Compassion Great Telephone Manner Empathetic Great communication Friendly
Time commitment: A suggested time commitment is 20 minutes each week, although you can give as much or as little time as you like and agree on a routine with your tele-friend/s
Expenses reimbursed: Out of pocket expenses are reimbursed.
