Local swimming, fun and volunteering opportunities

Barry Beavers Disabled Swimming Club welcomes swimmers of all ages and all abilities. We have trained Halliwick Instructors and volunteer helpers. The Halliwick philosophy is based on Water Safety and Happiness in the water. We use games, music and suitable toys to have fun and teach swimming therapy and safety. We are always looking for new members and new volunteers.

Volunteering does not have to be in the water, we need help with Admin, Safeguarding and Recruitment. This latest copy of our magazine will give you some information and a taste of the fun we have.

I have just finished reading an article on volunteering. Our society could not run without an army of volunteers.

  • 14.2m people volunteer

  • 1 in 5 people formally volunteer each month

  • 50% of the population get involved with informal volunteering, this could be as simple as picking up a neighbours shopping

Barry Beavers Disabled Swimming Club is completely run by volunteers. We all give our time willingly to ensure our swimmers, have fun, make friends and learn to swim using the Halliwick concept.

We all volunteer for different reasons, but I thought I would share why I volunteer.

  • Fun: I love getting in the water and having fun. I love seeing the smiles on the faces as we sing silly songs and race to find the numbers to fill in bingo cards

  • New Skills: I have become a Halliwick Instructor and learnt new skills. I never imagined that I would enjoy writing a lesson plan and working with children, but I do. I’ve even learnt how to use a stop watch and done some timekeeping for galas. Never stop challenging yourself to learn something new

  • New Friends: I have made some great fiends at our club and across the Astra 15 region. There are friendly faces everywhere and everyone wants to help

  • Confidence: I cannot carry a tune and would never sing in public. I now happily inflict my tortuous singing on you all, and keep my fingers crossed you will join in and drown my voice out. I would not have done that a few years ago

  • Better Health: physical, mental and emotional well being. Getting out and focusing on a lesson is good for me. I could sit at home on a Saturday afternoon, but I feel so much better for sharing my time with the Beavers family

  • Satisfaction: the best part of helping at Beavers is seeing the progression that our swimmers make. I have witnessed very nervous swimmers completely transform to the point of putting their face in the water and relaxing in a back float. I have seen shy swimmers, run to greet their friends and chatter about their week

Beavers makes a massive difference, to everyone that walks through the door. We want to continue to help as many swimmers as we can, so I will blatantly ask for help. There are so many ways that you could assist with running of our club, in and out of the water.

  • Become an Instructor

  • Poolside Volunteer

  • Welcome Desk

  • Raise funds

  • Grant applications

  • Social Committee

  • Administration Help

  • Membership Secretary

Don’t be shy, if you can help or know anyone else that can help, let us know.  Read our Summer 2024 magazine
