Clive Curtis - A quarter century of community: Binding a fond farewell
Twenty-five years. A whole generation. Looking back to November 1999, when I first stepped into Glamorgan Voluntary Services (formerly VCVS) as the Western Vale Development Officer, it feels like both a lifetime and a blink of an eye. The rural Vale was my canvas, and supporting its vibrant communities, my passion.
From those early days, nurturing local initiatives, my journey blossomed. As Partnership Development Manager, I delved into the complex and crucial world of Health and Social Care, a role that brought both challenges and immense rewards. A subsequent restructure saw me embrace the multifaceted responsibilities of Operational Manager, navigating governance, funding, training, and support services for our incredible members. Each day was a tapestry woven with purpose and the shared desire to make a difference.
Then came the exciting chapter of St. Paul's Community Centre in Penarth. In 2022, GVS took on this gem, and for the past three years, I’ve poured my heart into transforming it into a true community hub. Seeing it flourish, providing vital services and becoming a cornerstone of Penarth life, fills me with immense pride.
This journey, spanning a quarter of a century, has been nothing short of extraordinary. It’s a testament to the power of community, the resilience of the human spirit, and the unwavering dedication of my colleagues. To each and every one of you, thank you. Your support, camaraderie, and shared passion have made every day a joy.
My time at GVS has been a chapter filled with impactful moments, lasting friendships, and the satisfaction of knowing we’ve made a real difference. As I prepare to embark on my retirement, I carry with me a treasure trove of cherished memories.
But this isn’t goodbye, it’s a ‘see you later’. My passion for building bridges continues, now with a focus on the Middle East. My work with the British Omani Society and the Saudi British Society will allow me to forge even stronger links between the UK and these fascinating countries, building on the skills and experiences I've gained at GVS.
Thank you, Glamorgan Voluntary Services, for an incredible 25 years. You’ve been more than a workplace; you’ve been a family. And to the communities we’ve served, thank you for allowing me to be a part of your story. Here’s to the next chapter, for all of us.
