Bike hire scheme launches in Llantwit Major
The Vale of Glamorgan Council has expanded its bike hire provision by introducing a scheme to Llantwit Major.
Operated by Brompton Bikes, a solar-powered docking facility for eight cycles has been installed outside the town’s railway station.
The bikes are available at £5 for 24 hours and can be folded away, making them ideal for commuters
Longer rentals are also available for the six-gear models, which can be reserved ahead of time, all through an app.
Cllr Bronwen Brooks, Vale of Glamorgan Council Cabinet Member for Sustainable Places, said: “I’m thrilled that we have been able to bring this innovative, cost-effective bike hire scheme to Llantwit Major.
“The Brompton Bikes can be folded away, are easy to use and offer rail passengers an attractive and sustainable travel option.
“Having declared a climate emergency, it is vital we make this type of transport available and affordable.
“The bikes will benefit the health and wellbeing of their users and also help the Council achieve its Project Zero target to become carbon neutral by 2030.”
The Council has secured money from the UK Government’s Shared Prosperity Fund for this project, which is available as part of the Levelling Up agenda.
It builds on hire bike provision already available in the Vale, where Wales’s first electronic bike share scheme launched in Penarth three years ago.
Further docking stations have since been introduced to Sully and Dinas Powys, with plans to extend the network further.
