Become a PAT Volunteer

Every week thousands of people of all ages enjoy a friendly visit from dog and cat owners who volunteer with Pets As Therapy (PAT). These PAT Teams visit a range of establishments including residential homes, day care centres, schools, universities, hospitals, hospices and prisons.

Volunteers and their pets bring comfort and companionship to people who may feel isolated and lonely. The visits also aid good health and wellbeing and can help young people improve their confidence and literacy skills.

As a PAT Volunteer you’ll become part of a rewarding volunteering group who make a difference to the lives of people in your local community. What’s more, you do this with the pet you love.

Any fit and healthy dog or cat can become a PAT Pet – no special training or qualifications are required. Pets must have lived with their owner for at least six months, be aged over nine months and be able to pass our temperament assessment.   A copy of your pet’s vaccination certificates is also required.

PAT Volunteer Teams are supported by the charity and we can introduce you to local establishments who have registered with us and are waiting for a visit.  Regular visits are generally appreciated, but there’s no minimum or maximum commitment.  It’s up to you how much time you dedicate to volunteering.  All we ask is that your dog or cat has regular breaks and doesn’t work for more than two hours at any time.

Therapeutic visits by PAT Teams can:

  • Bring comfort and companionship to people living in local communities who may feel isolated, confused and lonely

  • Help young people to improve their literacy skills and encourage confidence and concentration in the classroom

  • Aid a patient’s recovery and rehabilitation and help improve mental health and wellbeing
