Y Gegin introduces tasty new salad bar

The restaurant at the University Hospital of Wales has introduced a new salad bar to provide staff, patients and visitors with healthier - and tastier - meal options at lunchtime.

Y Gegin, which is situated on the Upper Ground Floor and is clearly signposted from concourse, is now offering freshly-prepared salads, dips and toppings between 11.30am and 1.30pm every weekday.

It’s part of a drive to provide customers with a greater variety of nutritious food choices in addition to the popular grilling station, stir fry and hot display counters.

During breakfast hours, between 7.30am and 11am, the salad bar is stocked with a wide selection of fresh fruit, cereals and yoghurts.

Andrew Pritchard, Deputy Head of Catering, said: “Since it was brought in as a trial about a month ago, the salad bar has been really popular and sales are picking up day by day.

“There’s definitely a demand for more healthy choices, and as Wales’ largest hospital we have duty to provide them. The salad comes in a box which people can take away with them, or they can sit in.

“I think Y Gegin is a bit of a hidden gem. It’s got a modern, welcoming feel to it and it’s a haven away from the clinical environment of the hospital.”

Cardiff and Vale’s Public Health Team is working with the operational and catering teams to ensure that 75% of all food and drink meet requirements for sugar and fat content.

Profits from the restaurant are re-invested back into the health board for patient services.
