Welsh NHS Confederation briefing: Placing the patient at the centre of care

This is the latest briefing from the Welsh NHS Confederation, the national membership body representing all the organisations making up the NHS in Wales.

The briefing highlights examples of innovative practice which have taken place in recent months across NHS Wales to support patients to take charge of their health and care, while providing patient-focused services. Examples within the briefing include:

  • The construction of the new breast cancer ‘centre of excellence’ in Aneurin Bevan University Health Board.

  • The launch of a new Stroke Improvement Programme in Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board.

  • The introduction of an optometry support service for homeless citizens in Cardiff and Vale University Health Board.

  • The transformation of outpatient services in Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board.

  • The development of a national hospital pharmacy system supported by Digital Health and Care Wales.

  • Resources to support strategic workforce planning for both primary care and wider healthcare across Wales by Health Education and Improvement Wales.

  • A new health coach pilot to support healthy lifestyle change launched in Hywel Dda University Health Board.

  • Free exercise classes for people with arthritis provided in Powys Teaching Health Board.

  • A report published by Public Health Wales highlighting the opportunities to maximise health and wellbeing for spatial planning in the COVID-19 pandemic recovery.

  • The Acute Clinical Team in Swansea Bay University Health Board praised for the new approach and support provided to patients in the community during the pandemic.

  • Velindre University NHS Trust expanding and enhancing its Care Unit (ACU) and Patient Support Unit (PSU) provision.

  • Surf Life Saving Association Wales supporting the Welsh Ambulance Service’s #Defibuary campaign and also boosting the skills of their teams.
