Volunteer Mentor – Visiting Mum Wales

Young people who experience their Mum going to prison may feel unsettled. Having someone there, helping them to maintain contact whilst Mum is away can make all the difference. That someone could be you.

Through our dedicated Volunteer Mentors, we work with individual families in North & South Wales to prepare carers and children for visiting HMP Styal or HMP Eastwood Park.

Our Mentors aged 18+ meet with a child, young person, or family up to twice a month to offer support, encouragement, and guidance. Mentors provide emotional support to the family and prepare children and carers for the prison visit. The support package is tailored to the individual, as each family will have specific needs.

The Mentor then offer transport and accompaniment to HMP Styal or HMP Eastwood Park, based on the needs of the family.  Where required, volunteers offer support to the carer and children after the visit has taken place and help to arrange future visits.

You will need to have access to a vehicle and have a full, clean driving licence to be considered for this volunteering role.

Time commitment:  A suggested time commitment is at least 10 hours a month for 12 months, negotiable with the organisation.
Expenses reimbursed: Travel expenses are reimbursed.
Training:  Full training is provided.
Selection procedures: An informal discussion, application form completion, 2 references and an enhanced disclosure and barring check (cost met by organisation).
