Volunteer and Help People with Sight Loss

Volunteer as a My Guide Sighted Guides and support a person with sight loss to safely navigate the environment,
building self-confidence and increasing social interaction; whilst maintaining dignity and promoting independence. 
You must be aged 18+.  This will take place within your local community with a possibility of travel to support out of area too.

Duties will include to:

  • Provide sighted guide assistance on a regular basis to people living with sight loss to help them achieve their goals (commonly weekly)

  • Undertake all elements of My Guide training (approximately 2 days)

  • Support access to local services and facilities in their local community

  • Provide regular feedback on progress and any issues that arise to your line manager

  • Provide the My Guide role at agreed times/location based on the mutually agreed activity plan

  • Maintain professional boundaries and adhering to safeguarding procedures

Time commitment: Time commitment is variable depending on individual needs.  A suggested time commitment is approximately 3 hours per week.  The lengths of partnerships vary, from 6 weeks to 12 months+ your availability will be matched to a suitable customer.
Expenses reimbursed: Payment of all out of pocket expenses in line with Guide Dogs policy.
Training provided: Full training including 1 day Sighted Guide training with certification upon completion of training and Guide Dogs safeguarding training.  Support, information, training and resources to enable you to undertake your role safely and effectively.
Selection procedures: An informal discussion, application form completion, 2 references and a disclosure and barring check (cost met by organisation).
