The reason I like Barry Beavers is because…
Volunteer: Aidan Thomson from Barry Beavers Disabled Swimming Club
Barry Beavers is a swimming club that helps children with physical or/and mental disabilities to swim in the water.
When they have mastered certain skills, swimmers will be awarded a badge in the order of: Red, Yellow and green. What happens is massive posters will be put near the areas of the pool where the tasks for the badge will take place. To obtain a badge, swimmers will have to complete all the tasks on the posters in order to succeed and if they do, they get the badge. After you get the green badge, you are able to access the deep end of the pool without assistance.
Every year, starting in march, all of the disabled swimming clubs located around Wales will group together to do a gala. Before the gala takes place, the club will time you depending on how many lengths you swim. This can range from one length, two lengths and four lengths. After the gala has your time, you do the lengths you need to and you need to swim so that your time is the closest to the time when you club timed you.
After everyone has swam, the medals will be awarded and everyone goes home.
The reason I like Barry Beavers is because it is really fun each time you go and there are lots of people you can meet simply by turning up once.
