The All Wales Adult Cystic Fibrosis Centre unveils its new look
To mark the completion of the new ward and expansion of the All Wales Adult Cystic Fibrosis (CF) Centre, based at University Hospital Llandough (UHL), the Centre is adopting a new logo designed by a current CF patient.
Building work to transform the All Wales Adult Cystic Fibrosis Centre started in January last year (2020), thanks to funding from Welsh Government. The investment has provided an additional 16 en-suite bedrooms within the existing CF centre, along with four en-suite special infection bedrooms; two on UHL’s West 2 ward and two on the East 2 ward.
Building work finished in January and the centre was officially handed over to the Health Board from the contractors in April this year (2021). To celebrate the new look centre, the Health Board decided to run a design competition among its patients in search of a new logo.
Lorraine Speight, Service Manager, Cardiff and Vale University Health Board, spoke about the competition on behalf of the large multidisciplinary team: “It felt a good opportunity to reflect our new look and enhance our communication and reputation to colleagues both nationally and internationally. We wanted this to be a visual and integral representation of who we are, providing a branding for the service which patients and their families - both current and future - can relate to and with.
“It was felt that the patients should design the logo as this is their service and they have been instrumental over the years in developing the CF centre by raising funds and also participating in our patient leadership and advocacy courses.”
All 335 patients were emailed and asked to submit a design for the new logo. The service received 20 entries which were shortlisted to nine before patients had to vote for their favourite. The winning design was created by patient Paul Jones.
“I’m so pleased to have won the competition and feel proud to have my design as the official logo for the service. I wanted friendly, colourful tones in the logo and didn’t want it to appear clinical or medical but clean and fresh.
“The map of Wales symbolises our service as being the only adult CF service in Wales. The colour green not only represents our Better Life logo by providing an intrinsic identity colour but it symbolises a practical diagnostic use in reference to the sputum produced by CF patients”, said Paul.
Lorraine and the clinical team added, “The logo was important to us as a service with a high research portfolio when delivering presentations both within the UK and internationally. The service has six oral presentations and five poster presentations at the European CF Conference in June 2021, albeit virtually again this year!
“To this end it was felt that a logo was important to incorporate into current and future presentations to raise our profile and further enhance our worldwide reputation as a service of excellence. We feel this design is both memorable and easy for people to identify our service with.”
