Staying safe and well on Bonfire Night

This time of year, as many of us head out to celebrate Bonfire Night, there will be a great deal of community fireworks displays and bonfire events.

When out with friends, family and loved ones, remember, remember the hazards and dangers of fireworks too.

When venturing out, be sure to:

  • Avoid wearing loose or flammable clothing that may catch fire when close to bonfires or when using sparklers

  • Wear gloves to keep warm and protect yourself when handling sparklers and fireworks

  • Avoid consuming any alcohol when handling sparklers or fireworks

  • Only buy legal fireworks from a licensed seller so you are confident of their quality

When out celebrating, don’t forget to:

  • Ensure all children are supervised around fireworks and bonfires. Keep them in sight and away from anything hot.

  • Have a bucket of water ready to cool sparklers or put out small fires

  • Don’t return to a lit firework, leave it to either a professional or get to a safe distance

  • Make use of a bucket of sand to extinguish sparklers after use instead of water or throwing them on the ground

If you have an urgent medical concern, please visit NHS 111 or call 111 in the first instance, and only call 999 in the case of extreme emergencies.
