South Glamorgan Community Health Council (CHC) is looking for a new member from the third sector

Can you help?

The CHC does the following:

  • Consider health issues from the public’s viewpoint

  • Visit local services to hear from patients and those who care for and about them about their Experiences

  • Look at local and national NHS plans and proposals to make sure they meet the needs of local communities

  • Meet regularly with NHS managers

  • Speak to people in their communities about their views and experiences of the NHS services

  • Provide a free, confidential and independent complaints advocacy service for people who want support to raise a concern

 Members of Community Health Councils are required to carry out or contribute towards a range of core functions and activities including the following: 

  • Responding to all relevant consultations within the Community Health Council’s area of operation.

  • Entering and inspecting premises owned or controlled by a range of health bodies including Local Health Boards and NHS Trusts.

  • As a member of the CHC serving on committees and joint committees to ensure that the Community Health Council delivers across all of its areas of operation.

  • Developing and approving changes to the Community Health Council’s constitution, standing orders or any other governing documents, including its policies and procedures.

  • Preparing and approving a range of reports.

 Personal Specification 

All Community Health Council Members will be required to demonstrate the following qualities across the range of the organisation’s responsibilities: 

 Commitment  

  1. A commitment to the work of the Community Health Council, believing in its purpose and functions. A genuine interest in improving health services for your community.

  2.  Reliable, punctual and professional in attendance and conduct at meetings.

  3.  Willingness to participate in the continuing development of the Community Health Council.

   Attitude and Approach

  1. Positive approach to the work of the Community Health Council, working with enthusiasm and energy.

  2. Respectful and appreciative of the contribution that others make, both inside and outside the organisation.

  3. Welcoming and encouraging towards people from different backgrounds who may bring with them, different opinions and perspectives. 

  4. Sensitive, diplomatic and tactful in dealing with others.

  5.  Flexibility in approaching complex problems and issues.

  6.  Willing to learn new information and contribute to solving problems.

  7. A clear understanding of and commitment to the Community Health Council’s Code of Conduct and Nolan’s Seven Principles of Public Life.

Skills and Experience    

  1. Experience of living or working in the Community Health Council area. (You are likely to have an ongoing connection with the area and keep abreast of local health issues.)

  2.  Ability to work as part of a team.

  3.  Experience and understanding of a diversity of backgrounds and opinions.

  4.  Experience of dealing with confidential issues.

  5.   Ability to consider reports and other documentation and contribute to discussion and decisions.
