Reconnections Cymru Service

Deafblind UK is offering a service called Reconnections Cymru. This free service operates across Vale of Glamorgan, Cardiff, Newport, Bridgend, Swansea and Neath Port Talbot.

Our Reconnections service supports those with dual sensory loss in reconnecting with their local communities, accessing social opportunities and reducing their isolation. We offer in person support, where we work 1-1 with individuals to increase their confidence, social mobility and access to social opportunities.

This service can be tailored to meet the unique support needs of each person, and the goals set can range from simple to more complex ones, such as building the confidence to visit a local cafe when they please or join a local community group. We also host our own monthly peer support groups as part of this service and are keen to welcome new attendees.  We intent to have a group running in each area.

Our groups currently running are:

  • Vale of Glamorgan social group - every third Monday of the month, 1:30-3:30, at Barry Library, CF63 4RW.

  • Newport social group - every third Friday of the month, 1:30-3:30, at The Salvation Army, 1 Hill St, NP20 1LZ.

  • Bridgend social group - every second Friday of the month, 11:00-1:00, at Nolton Hall next to Parish Church, CF31 3NH.

  • Neath Port Talbot social group - every second Tuesday of the month, 10:00-12:00, Neath Port Talbot Council for Voluntary Service, 17 Alfred Street, SA11 1EF.

Reconnections was developed during the post-Covid period as we recognised a need for increased support in the deafblind community for those driven into their homes and disconnected from the outside world. Being aware of how important social connection is for our overall wellbeing, we are here to help those who may struggle with communication and accessing information. It may be the case that someone is unaware of the opportunities available to them or that they are too anxious to leave the house because of their sensory loss, leaving them lonely and isolated.

Reconnections service recipients and their carers can also access all of the services offered by Deafblind UK, including our helpline, emotional wellbeing and counselling services, a digital/telephone befriending service, accessible technology advice, casework/advocacy, and our employability service.

If you are aware of someone that would benefit from our support, please get in touch by contacting our helpline on 0800 132 320 , email: info@deafblind.org.uk, or our officer Nikita on 07950 008870, email: Nikita.Caldeira@deafblind.org.uk.
