New Self-Service Wheelchair System Enhances Accessibility at University Hospital of Wales
The Health Board have commenced a trial to improve access to wheelchairs for patients and visitors who attend the University Hospital of Wales for outpatient appointments or visiting relatives and friends.
Wheelshare is a system which is designed to improve the availability of wheelchairs, improving accessibility and support independent mobility for those who need it.
The Wheelshare wheelchairs are strategically placed in high-traffic areas, making them easy to access when entering the hospital. They can be found at the drop-off area near the concourse and at the multi-story car park, ensuring that visitors have quick and easy access right from the start of their journey.
One of the standout features of this system is its simplicity and ease of use. The self-service model allows users to easily locate and access a wheelchair without needing to rely on hospital staff. Whether it's a patient attending an appointment or a visitor assisting a loved one, the new system offers a convenient solution to mobility challenges.
What makes this service even more patient-friendly is that it’s completely free for the first six hours. This ensures that visitors and patients can focus on what matters most – receiving care and attending appointments – without worrying about transportation around the hospital.
By implementing this wheelchair system, the University Hospital of Wales continues to prioritise accessibility, enhancing the hospital experience for everyone who comes through its doors.
