Nature Reserve Volunteers

The site is a mixture of woodland, scrubland and, the rather rare, unimproved limestone grassland.  Without maintenance, scrub would take over the meadowland and gradually transform into woodland.  As it stands, the area is a favoured spot for passing birds, has a good range of butterflies and some rare plants.

This could be an excellent opportunity for people aged 18+ who prefer physical work to exercise and consider a chance to learn new skills in the fresh air whilst helping bio-diversity to be preferable to time in a gym.

Lavernock Nature Reserve lies between Penarth and Sully. It consists of 3 fields, in total 20 acres, between Fort Rd, Lavernock (the lane that runs to Lavernock Point), and St Mary’s Well Bay at Swanbridge.  Two of the fields are Sites of Special Scientific Interest and there is a World War II anti-aircraft battery in the care of Cadu (Ancient Monuments, Wales).

A squad of volunteers takes care of the reserve using hand tools:

  • meadows are mown

  • scrubland cleared

  • tracks and hedges maintained

  • In the course of a year you would have the opportunity to engage in a wide range of activities, generally working as part of a team

The work requires physical labour so you would need to be able-bodied.
Stout waterproof footwear, thorn resistant gloves and clothing are advisable.

Time commitment: We meet on a Friday morning 9.15/9.30am – 12 noon.  Sometimes a little longer if something needs finishing
Training provided: On the job training is provided.
Expenses reimbursed: Unfortunately, we are unable to reimburse a travel expense.
Selection procedure: Informal discussion and application form completion.
If you are interested in this opportunity, please contact us using the form below.
