(Hosted on Zoom)
Early childhood education and care (more commonly termed ‘Early Years’ in the UK) has one of the most gender-imbalanced workforces in the world. In the final of our seminars for the Vale of Glamorgan, this session will be a ‘share and learn’ opportunity, designed to support services to build staff teams that include people of any gender; are equipped to work in gender-flexible ways; and can deliver the best quality, gender-sensitive education and service.
Drawing on the latest research evidence from around the world and UK programmes we will work through the session, covering:
· Myths and stereotypes about men in early years education
· Male-inclusive recruitment and retention
· Experiences of men in the early years
· Creating a gender-confident team
· Communicating with parents
The session will be led by Dr Jeremy Davies, Head of Communications at the Fatherhood Institute, and a member of the Global Equality Collective and Diverse Educators. Jeremy was Deputy Chair of the Department for Education’s Gender Diversity Task and Finish Group (2017-18), sat on the Fawcett Society’s Commission on Gender Stereotypes in Early Childhood (2019-20) and was Co-Investigator on the ESRC-funded GenderEYE (Gender Diversification in Early Years Education) study (2018-20). Jeremy also leads the FI’s MITEY campaign. https://miteyuk.org/
Suitable for early years, flying start, early help, social care, education and childcare leaders, managers and practitioners (and many more!)
Things you may want to know before the seminar:
Delivery
We will be using Zoom for the seminar. The link can be found on your tickets (via Eventbrite)
Numbers are limited and safety is important to us; so please do not share the log in details with anyone.
IMPORTANT! The link for the Zoom meeting will be on your Eventbrite tickets. We know that this process can sometimes be a bit clunky when joining the Zoom meeting and can be unsettling, so we will also email you the direct link to the meeting. Please look out for this email.
Audio
Please mute your microphone when not speaking to limit outside noise.
If possible, please use headphones to limit the feedback.
To limit speaking over one another - you can use the raise hand or chat box function for comments and questions.
Please ensure you are in a brightly lit space so that your face can be seen clearly to help those who may be lip reading.
We like to see your faces – but if you are not able to, or uncomfortable with, having your camera on, please use the chat box function during discussions.
Visual
All our slides will have a minimum font size of 12+. You can request a copy of the slides in large print.
Language
Our programmes are delivered in English only at this time. We attempt to avoid using acronyms or complex terminology, but if there is any terminology you aren’t sure of, please direct-message the facilitator.
Processing Time
We know that seminars give a lot of information in a short space of time, and we all process information differently and at different speeds. After the event you will be sent a PDF version of the slides for reference, and any other resources we deem suitable and helpful.
Comfort
In a seminar/workshop there will be one ten-minute break.
Participants are always welcome to step away from the workshop if they need to (for their wellbeing, worship, or family needs, for example), we only ask that you notify the facilitators via the chat box.
Further information
If there are additional default barriers to participation that we can remove, or questions you have for us, please email j.garratt@fatherhoodinstitute.org and we’ll do what we can to support you.
WE NEED YOU! We want to explore some of the experiences of men who work in early years, family services or childcare. We are seeking the views of ALL the workforce – you don’t need to be a man - all responses are welcome, valuable, and anonymous. We use the results to shape the seminar content and will share the headline responses within the session. Therefore, it is essential that you please complete the survey before 20th November
