Kick start your summer with NYLO's nutrition family programme

Nutrition for Your Little One’s (NYLO) free Summer programme, starting on 20 July, is available to families within the Cardiff and Vale area with children ages 1-5.

The programme aims to give parents confidence to provide a balanced diet for their children and help them maintain a healthy weight.

Claire Fulthorpe, Lead Early Years Obesity Prevention Dietitian at Cardiff and Vale University Health Board said: “With the interactive, engaging and fun sessions of the programme, we hope to allow children and their families the time to thrive and enjoy all the benefits good health can provide.

“This programme is beneficial to all, but particularly to children who are already above a healthy weight or not eating a balanced diet. Or for children that are fussy eaters with faltering growth with continuous referrals to Community Paediatric Dietitians.”

The two-hour weekly sessions are for parents and carers to attend with their child. Parents/carers and children will be in separate sessions for the first 1.5 hours, and will then reunite for a family snack time for the remaining 30 minutes.

Children will be encouraged to take part in healthy food activity and active play sessions, delivered by registered staff.

Families will receive recourses to take home each week, and information about activities to try at home.

The six sessions are as follows:

Week 1: Making Healthy Steps with NYLO

Week 2: Getting the Right Balance for Your Family

Week 3: Setting a Healthy Snack Time

Week 4: Encouraging Your Child to Eat Well

Week 5: Helpful Tools

Week 6: Family Time

NYLO was launched in March 2021 in alignment with Welsh Government’s Healthy Weight Healthy Wales strategy, to give children the best start in life.

Additionally, the service corresponds with Cardiff and the Vale’s Move More, Eat Well 2020-2023 Plan, which strives to ensure that people are moving more and eating well throughout their lives.
