The Sporting Memories Network (SMN) is a social enterprise like no other. We are here to support and engage with older people (50+) who are living with dementia, may have poor mental health, or are socially isolated. We do this through remembering and talking about sport. By sharing memories of sporting moments, however big or small, through a passion for sport people are instantly connected, reawakening thoughts, feelings and times that would have otherwise been undiscovered. Clubs embrace the chance to undertake physical activities, such as boccia and new age kurling, proving that everyone can take part no matter their age or condition.
In June 2019, SMN was awarded funding from the Welsh Government, Sport Wales and Public Health Wales to deliver a project to support the aim of improving mental and physical health by enabling the adoption of healthy and active lifestyles across Wales alongside our partners Cardiff City FC Community Foundation, the College of Human and Health Sciences, Swansea University, Pobl, Glamorgan County Cricket Club, Cricket Wales, Ospreys in the Community, Swansea Council, Vi-Ability, and The Pollen Shop.
The project facilitates weekly volunteer-led Sporting Memories Clubs, both online and in-person in the community, as well as telephone circles, develops new reminiscence resources in both English and Welsh languages, and recruits volunteers to run our weekly sessions. One weekend per year will be dedicated as a Memories Weekend.
We are looking for an enthusiastic, self-motivated and personable individual to join the team and be embedded in the local area, working closely with the project’s partners. You will be passionate about being part of a growing organisation at the forefront of innovative techniques to benefit older people, particularly those at risk of isolation or who are lonely, those living with dementia or memory problems and people who have experienced depression. You will be expected to think creatively and you should be able to multi-task and prioritise your workload accordingly.
A background in health or social care and a love of sport is preferable but not essential. Being able to converse in Welsh is a desirable but not essential skill.
