Huge win for Cardiff and Vale UHB at Advancing Healthcare Awards UK 2023

We are delighted that colleagues at Cardiff and Vale UHB have been recognised for their “ground-breaking” rehabilitation model at the Advancing Healthcare Awards UK 2023.

The Cardiff and Vale UHB rehabilitation model team — led by Dr Emma Cooke, Deputy Director of Therapies and Healthcare Science, won the Welsh Government’s award for value-based care at the Advancing Healthcare Awards UK 2023.

The recovery-focused rehabilitation model aims to optimise health and support self- management, focusing on addressing health inequalities, through a growing range of co-produced and co-delivered community interventions available in multiple formats.

Together, the team are providing non-medicalised, health generating care, delivered closer to home with transition to sustainable long-term community led solutions.

The UK Advancing Healthcare Awards ceremony was held in London at the Park Plaza Victoria on 21 April. The ceremony celebrated the achievements of the finalists and attendees heard from many inspirational speakers throughout the afternoon.

Speaking of the rehabilitation model, the judges commented: “A ground-breaking piece of work, which not only had a big impact on patients, but also offered ideas and inspiration for developing other areas of practice.”

Dr Emma Cooke, Deputy Director of Therapies and Healthcare Science, said: “I am delighted that our team have won the Welsh Government’s award for value-based care at the Advancing Healthcare Awards UK 2023. It’s a real tribute to the entire team’s passion and dedication to improving patient care through co-production through innovative programmes of work.

“The recovery focussed model is significantly shifting the way we work, it creates and delivers co-produced and co-delivered community interventions that meet the needs of the people we care for.

“Already, the outcomes and benefits are far-reaching. Since introducing the model, there have been 5,241 reduced visits to acute hospital sites through community-based interventions, 92% of participants strongly recommend the service to friends and family and 85% have reported clinically significant positive changes.”

Dr Fiona Jenkins, Executive Director of Therapies and Health Science at Cardiff and Vale UHB, added: “Congratulations to the entire Cardiff and Vale UHB Rehabilitation Model Team for their very well-deserved win. There were more than 170 entries to this year’s Advancing Healthcare Awards UK and this is a real testament to the incredible work and achievements of our staff.

“Winning the Welsh Government’s award for value-based care also highlights the incredible benefits of our recovery-focused rehabilitation model and the impact it has on patients.”

In December 2022, the rehabilitation model team was the overall winner at the 2022 Advancing Healthcare Awards Wales and picked up the Excellence in Rehabilitation award.
