Highly-valued Medical Secretary Lynne Davies celebrates 40 years of service

A much-valued Medical Secretary who joined Cardiff and Vale University Health Board 40 years ago has been awarded a prestigious Long Service Award.

Lynne Davies joined the Trauma and Orthopaedic Department at the University Hospital of Wales as a Medical Secretary in February 1982 having gained an RSA Diploma for Medical Secretaries.

Over a career that spans more than 40 years, Lynne has seen lots of changes — including the South Glamorgan Area Health Authority becoming Cardiff and Vale University Health Board and the ever-evolving hospital footprint. Lynne has also seen first hand the huge developments in technology and science.

Lynne has continued to develop her skills and is a highly skilled Medical Secretary with the ability to type accurately and quickly and take notes in shorthand, a rare skill in 2023.

Lynne said this often comes in handy at Trauma Clinics as the teams treat lots of different patients whose conditions can sometimes change unexpectedly — meaning it is imperative notes are available quickly.

Speaking of her role and 40 years of service, Lynne said: “My role has evolved and I face new challenges. I am continually learning.

“I am grateful to have worked with some remarkable characters and I have always strived to provide a good service for the patients I have had the privilege of encountering. I hope to continue doing so for the next few years, at least.”

Lynne currently works with the Orthopaedic Paediatric Consultants in Noah’s Ark Children’s Hospital for Wales and is a vital member of the team. As part of her role, she carries out the required secretarial duties, manages medical staffing schedules for clinics and support with patient and staff queries.

Consultant Paediatric Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon, Miss Clare Carpenter said: “It has been an honour and education to work alongside Lynne for the last 13 years.

“We met over 20 years ago whilst as a young aspiring surgeon and she quickly whipped me into shape and continues to demand the same standards daily.

“She is an integral, steadfast part of our wonderful team and we cannot thank her enough for her unwavering commitment and hard work.”

Ceri Phillips, Vice-Chair at Cardiff and Vale UHB, presented Lynne with her certificate at the award ceremony.

Speaking of Lynne, Ceri said: “It was an honour and a privilege to present Lynne with her long service award.

“Lynne is a highly-valued member of the team at the Children’s Hospital for Wales who has dedicated her career to providing a high-quality and compassionate service for the children and families she works with.

“Congratulations Lynne, and thank you for your long service.”
