Young fathers really do respond well to the right support, delivered in the right way. This comprehensive seminar draws on available evidence, case studies and voices of young fathers to explore what it is like being both young and being a father, and their engagement with services and other professionals. Participants on the course explore barriers to positive father-child engagement in families, the personal and cultural issues which shape perceptions of young men/fathers and begin to develop inclusive strategies.
For this event, the Fatherhood Institute is delighted to be able to draw upon the expertise of Dr Carmen Clayton, who is a Reader in Family and Cultural Dynamics at Leeds Trinity University. Carmen has been focusing on young fatherhood research for over a decade. Her latest study ‘New Pathways for Young Fathers’ worked in partnership with several external organisations to investigate young fathers’ EET (employment, education and training) and NEET (not in employment, education and training) trajectories, formal support provision available and wider policy implications. Prior to this, she undertook research which explored young fathers’ higher education interests. She was a recipient of ESRC (Economic Social Research Council) funding to conduct a qualitative longitudinal study on young fatherhood and service support needs at the University of Leeds between 2012-15.
Suitable for Flying Start, family nurse partnerships, parenting services, early help, early years, social care, maternity and health services.
