FoodShare Pantry Volunteer Driver

The FoodShare Pantries have been established to help prevent food waste as well as to support those facing food insecurity.  By collecting ‘end of day surplus’ from the supermarkets the project can ensure that edible food does not go to waste or landfill and is used to support those in our community who may be finding it difficult to access food to feed themselves and their families.

Volunteer drivers aged 18+ will collect this surplus food and deliver it back to the pantry within the same journey, to be distributed to our customers the next day.

Location: Vale of Glamorgan/Bridgend/Cardiff as agreed

Suggested hours:  St Athan Pantry collections for supermarket surplus will be on a Tuesday evening weekly.  Llantwit Major Pantry collections for supermarket surplus will be on a Wednesday evening weekly.  There may occasionally be additional collections from other suppliers outside of these times during the day in the week.

You will help to:

  • Drive to specified supermarkets to collect surplus food for FoodShare within the allocated time slot

  • Speak with store staff to ensure that the food collected is correct and fit for purpose and to attempt to build a friendly working relationship with regular staff so that our charity is front of mind for them when other opportunities arise

  • deliver the collected food directly to the FoodShare pantry and then determine which, if any, items need to be placed in the fridge/freezer and do so accordingly before leaving

  • work to ensure food hygiene and environmental health standards are maintained and specifically that the ‘chilled chain’ is not compromised (chilled items not to be kept out of a chiller for more than 20 minutes and if so should be transported in cool bags/boxes)

Volunteers will need:

  • A clean driving license

  • A safe approach to driving

  • Ability to lift heavy goods

  • Good communication skills

  • An understanding of the importance of preventing food waste

  • The ability to work as part of a remote team and on your own initiatialy

It would also be great if you are:

  • Keen to share ideas, learn and contribute to the development of the FoodShare project

  • Flexible with possible cover of collections/deliveries other than those you are normally responsible for

Time commitment:  St Athan Pantry collections for supermarket surplus will be on a Tuesday evening weekly.  Llantwit Major Pantry collections for supermarket surplus will be on a Wednesday evening weekly.  There may occasionally be additional collections from other suppliers outside of these times during the day in the week.
