Fairoaks Residents celebratory barbeque
Fairoaks residents celebrated the finishing of phase one of their community garden by holding a barbeque to thank the many kind hearted local firms who donated materials, monetary donations and working hours.
The amount of materials we had donated was fantastic. We had everything from planters, soil, plants including shrubs, decking, paint.
Maidenhead Aquatics gave us a fishpond with everything needed for the complete setup. The list goes on and on, the residents showed their thanks by the amount of them that showed up to meet and greet the local firms who attended.
Hotdogs, burgers, skewers, to accommodate both the meat eaters and vegetarians were provided for along with tea coffee and cold drinks to wash everything down.
Residents who had not seen the finished article were amazed at how much had been achieved and were even more amazed at how much was kindly donated.
It is fantastic to see what can be done when the local community pulls together, much of the heavy work was done by both LexisNexis and OGI who both sent teams of volunteers to help out along with money and material donations.
These teams were of course pointed in the right direction to bring about the total overall of the garden by members of the Dinas Powys residents group consisting of Nichola (“H”) Williams and Lawrence Brooke. With continued support from Sharon Williams, Ray Davies who apart from looking after our fishpond get their hands dirty by helping out with the day to day mundane garden jobs. Paul Wearne our fantastic warden give up much of his spare time to help out with the designing of posters, also playing the part of waiter, tea’s maid and odd job man.
We are now looking forward to shortly starting the second phase of the garden and hope that the local firms will again dig deep to ensure that phase 2 will be just as good as phase 1.
All of this of course is so that the community garden will be a low maintenance one. After the Covid-19 virus and the subsequent lockdowns left the garden in a terrible overgrown state which without the help of our wonderful volunteers would have become too much for the residents to maintain, as sad to say most of us, although willing, are past our prime.
Hopefully this was the first of many barbeques that will be held in the garden. We still need volunteers to help out with the day to day running of the garden and to ensure that it will again become an award winning one used more frequently by the community.
Anyone wishing to volunteer please contact either Nichola “H” Williams or Lawrence Brooke via the warden at Youldon house.
