Exciting events with Cancer Research UK
Cancer Research UK are pleased to report that we have some exciting events starting in 4 weeks time Wales which will be running to the end of October.
After postponing hundreds of events multiple times and not having any for 2 years now, we are SO excited to be able to offer Race for Life and Pretty Muddy events all over the country.
This year, we desperately need volunteers than ever and we would absolutely love to welcome you, your friends and family along to volunteer for an incredible day that will fundraise thousands and support our mission to help beat cancer sooner.
So what does volunteering at Race for Life look like?
This will look slightly different for everyone depending on your role but one thing is for sure - you are going to feel uplifted, positive and you’ll be buzzing from soaking up the atmosphere from the music, participants, emotion, stories, and coming together as a team to provide this experience! We have a huge variety of volunteering roles available including:
Volunteer Manager:
You would be the first point of contact on the day for all our volunteers, checking them in as they arrive, assigning them a radio if needed and supplying them with a snack pack to fuel them for the day. This is a brilliant role if you love being in the heart of all the volunteer action!
Admin Manager:
With the excitement of race day there’s bound to be questions, queries and forgotten running numbers. You can help by supporting our participants and spectators with any of these issues. You would be based in the event site, soaking up the atmosphere and helping all of our amazing participants to have an unforgettable day!
Set up and or de-rig:
In the Race for Life team, we have the skill of turning up to empty fields, transforming them in a matter of hours to deliver our events and then packing up and leaving the site spotless! We are always in need of any volunteers that want to get hands on and help set up our event site and courses and/or be around at the end of an event to help us dismantle and leave the venue in an immaculate condition. This is a brilliant opportunity to see first-hand the work that goes into Race for Life on event day.
Start line:
Get stuck in at the start of the day - from pitching flags and hanging banners to helping line up our participants and sending them on their way - you definitely won’t be twiddling your thumbs and you’ll be buzzing from the atmosphere from all the excited participants about to set off!
Finish line:
Similar to the start line, you will be involved in setting up this area and making sure our new ‘self-service’ area of water and medals is consistently replenished. If congratulating our participants as they cross the finish line is more your bag, then this is the role for you!
Hosting:
Are you a natural on the mic? This year we will have hosts on both our start and finish lines. You’re charismatic, confident and going to engage all our participants to remember why they are taking part, getting them energised and relaying any key important information before they set off. Previous experience in something similar is great but with the right person, we can provide all the training that is needed.
Lead bikes:
Are you a confident on 2 wheels? Our lead bikes will be at the front of our event and guide participants round the course. They will be on radio communication throughout to keep us posted on progress and any issues as they arise. This is a fantastic way to see our beautiful courses and a really important role for us on the day!
Back markers:
Similar to the lead bike, this role is for anyone that would happily walk along at the back of the event and reporting in to us on radio to keep us posted on location and any issues. You’ll probably end up chatting to participants at the back and hearing their inspiring stories of why they are taking part!
Marshalling:
Race for Life marshalling will involve cheering on our participants and lifting their spirits along the way. You also ensure their safety and that they're going in the right direction through the course. For Pretty Muddy, we have some very exciting marshalling opportunities and you will likely be placed on one of our obstacles and you could be squirting participants with water pistols, instructing them on what to do or simply encouraging them to GET MUDDY!
All briefings and any training required will be given in advance of the event from the event manager so you would feel fully prepared on the day.
