Cardiff and Vale University Health Board Updated Escalation Status | 11th March 2025

On 11th March 2025, the Cabinet Secretary for Health and Social Care, Jeremy Miles MS announced that the escalation status of Cardiff and Vale University Health Board has increased to Level 4 (targeted intervention) for finance, strategy and planning.

Suzanne Rankin, CEO of Cardiff and Vale University Health Board said: “The escalation status of the Health Board has increased to Level 4 (targeted intervention) for finance, strategy and planning and remains unchanged for all other areas.

“This decision has been taken due to reducing confidence levels regarding the Health Board’s financial position and forecast deficit for 2024/25, and concerns about the Health Board’s ability to develop and deliver in year plans to mitigate or reduce the forecast deficit.

“While it is disappointing that the escalation status has increased, there has been considerable effort from colleagues across the organisation to improve the financial position and understand and learn as the next financial year approaches.

“We know that more work must be done, and we remain committed to turning the deficit around and enhancing quality, efficiency and productivity across the organisation. The Health Board will continue to work closely with Welsh Government to address these challenges and reduce the organisation’s escalation status.

“We recognise that our planned care and diagnostics position throughout the year was lower than expected and understand the impact this has on patients. The Health Board is implementing an improvement plan to drive progress in reducing waiting time, and it is encouraging that January 2025 saw a reduction in the overall number of patients waiting more than eight weeks for diagnostics.

“We welcome Welsh Government’s recognition of our strong cancer and urgent care performance, and I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the outstanding commitment and efforts of all colleagues and partners.”
