Cardiff and Vale UHB's first digital midwife wins the CNO Excellence Award

Cardiff and Vale University Health Board’s first digital midwife has received the CNO Excellence Award for her outstanding work transforming services and increasing safety for families.

On International Day of the Midwife, Chief Nursing Officer for Wales, Sue Tranka, joined midwifery teams at University Hospital Wales to announce the latest winners of her CNO Excellence Awards.

Donna James was presented the award for her outstanding dedication to the service, her patients and their families.

The first digital midwife in the Health Board, Donna has transformed midwifery services and increased safety for families by enhancing communication between them and the service.

Donna is self-taught in computer programming and the electronic pregnancy referral system built during the pandemic has resulted in quicker, more convenient access to maternity care for women and birthing people and significant time savings for staff.

Five other midwives from Cardiff and Vale UHB also received awards for their outstanding contributions. This year’s winners were:

  • Katie Falvey — Student Midwife Award

  • Hannah Williams — Community Midwife Award

  • Zoe Millichap — Midwife Motivator Award

  • Maria Hollinshead — Feeding Support Award

  • Natalie Hurst — Going the Extra Mile Award

Speaking at the ceremony, Sue said: “It’s important the midwifery profession is recognised for the vital role it plays in people’s lives.

“It’s been fantastic to hear about the commitment of colleagues across Wales and to celebrate the role of midwives, who are central to people’s maternity care.

“These awards are a reflection of how much I value the dedication of the award winners, and I want to congratulate and thank them for all of their efforts.”
