Barry Bike Club Returns for 2025

The Vale of Glamorgan Council has announced the return of the Barry Bike Club.

The Vale Homes Community Investment and Active Travel teams worked in partnership to secure renewed funding for the scheme following a successful application to the UK Government’s Shared Prosperity Fund.

This has enabled the Vale to provide resources to enable the return of the free sessions, beginning on Tuesday 1 April.

Cllr Bronwen Brooks, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Sustainable Places said: “I am thrilled to welcome the return of the Barry Bike Club at Iolo Park again this year.

“Learning to ride a bike is an important life skill, not to mention the additional physical and mental health benefits associated with this type of exercise.

“The Barry Bike Club scheme aligns with our Project Zero goal to reduce our carbon emissions to net zero by 2030 as well encouraging residents of all ages to choose active travel.”

The club was first introduced in 2014 through the Communities First programme, but stopped due to a lack of funding.

The scheme continues in partnership with Pedal Power - a local charity bike organisation based in Cardiff – where officers from the charity will be able to promote and run cycling sessions throughout the spring and summer.

Community Investment and Involvement Officer for the Vale of Glamorgan Council, Mark Ellis added: “Having been involved in this project since the beginning, I am delighted that the Vale Housing Community Investment team along with the Active Travel team have been successful in receiving Shared Prosperity Funding once more.

“The children attending really enjoy Bike Club and it’s great to see their confidence grow in learning to ride a bike as they attend the sessions.”

The aim of Bike Club is to reduce health inequities through targeted cycling support to promote physical activity to local young children.

Bike Club sessions will be held every Tuesday from 16:00 to 17:30 for young children between the ages of four and ten learning to ride a bike in a safe and friendly environment.

Children can bring their own bike - if inspected and deemed safe by staff – or use one provided by Barry Bike Club. All children must be accompanied by an adult.
