Barry Bike Club Returns

The Vale Homes Community Investment team, in partnership with the Active Travel team are delighted to announce the Barry Bike Club shall be returning next year until 2025.

The teams worked hard last winter to submit a Shared Prosperity Funding application, in which they were successful.

This has enabled them to restart the bike club and purchase new bikes and a new container.

The club was first introduced in 2014 at Ty Iolo play area through the Communities First programme but stopped due to a lack of funding.

By continuing the successful partnership with Pedal Power (a local charity bike organisation based in Cardiff), officers from the charity are able to promote and run cycling sessions throughout the spring and summer.

The aim of the Bike Club is to reduce health inequities through targeted cycling support to promote physical activity to local young children.

Bike Club sessions will be held every Tuesday from 4.00pm to 5.30pm with young children between the ages of 4-10 learning to ride a bike in a safe and friendly environment.

A mother and local resident said: “my boy and girl can now ride a bike unaided and they have grown in confidence over the summer.

“They love being able to attend the sessions and the Pedal Power instructors have been fantastic with them.”

Community Investment and Involvement Officer for the Vale of Glamorgan Council, Mark Ellis added “Having been involved in this project in my previous role with Communities First, I was delighted to see Barry Bike Club return.

“It’s been great working alongside Lisa Elliott from the Active Travel team and I’m already looking forward to next year and getting more local children involved with learning to ride a bike.”

Sessions will begin around Easter until October 2024. Anyone interested in participating should contact Pedal Power.
