All Wales Hoarding Task Force - Launch Event

Friday, 15 September

The only mental health condition in the world that a person can lose their home for, hoarding has become one of the leading causes of eviction. With a prevalence rate that is higher than schizophrenia and OCD combined, there has been a marked lack of specialist hoarding support provision for years, with hoarding cases falling on housing by default to try and manage through tenancy governance approaches.

Despite animal hoarding being the leading cause of animal cruelty, despite 30% of fire related deaths being due to hoarding, and despite a disproportionately high suicide attempt rate amongst people who hoard, the agencies that encounter hoarding and all the complexities that surround the condition on a daily basis have been disjointed and fragmented for too long.

The All Wales Task Force aims to change this. We want to channel the expertise of practitioners not just from the field of housing but from the field of mental health, environmental health, animal welfare services, the fire service and floating tenancy support services, with the voices of people with lived expertise at the very centre of the task force to create clear guidelines and joined-up thinking, with compassion at the heart of our approaches to hoarding.

As well as talks from our team at Holistic Hoarding, researchers at Cardiff University and representatives from housing, we have an incredibly exciting line-up of guest speakers to speak about the power of collaborative practice including:

  • Paul Cooper from Hoarding Disorders UK

  • Heather Matuozzo and Dr Sam Wainman from Clouds End CIC

  • Craig Singler, Director of Housing from United Welsh

  • Kevin Smith from Thinking Space.

Join us on Friday September 15th 2023 at City Hall in Cardiff as we start channelling the expertise and knowledge of practitioners from of each of these fields to create a supportive and sustainable way of supporting people who hoard, surrounding them with new and compassionate approaches to create safer homes and communities for now and for the future.

Refreshments will be served throughout the session including a light lunch at 1pm.

We have a limited number of exhibition stands available for organisations. The whole event is fully subsidised to allow for as many people as possible to come together on the day, but we are asking for a minimum donation for each exhibition stand, from which all proceeds will go towards our charities of the year, Blaenavon RFC Under 15s and The Children's Football Alliance.

If you have any queries, please get in touch with Kayley Hyman directly on info@holistic-hoarding.co.uk

We look forward to seeing you there!
